If you only do one thing on a multi-day race, make it this

LOOK AFTER YOUR FEET!

Look away now if you are squeamish.

Oh dear, who was wearing the wrong shoes for a 29 mile run then? And then followed it by two more marathon days of running ignoring it?

This was my foot after 29 miles on the first day of the 3-day XNRG Druid Challenge back in November because I chose to wear shoes that I knew gave me blisters after 20 miles. Why did I do this? The word idiot springs to mind, but either way, for a multi-day race like the 6 marathons in 6-days Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica this 1-6 Feb, you must must MUST wear snug-fitting, comfy shoes.

Thrillingly, my new pair of Brooks Adrenaline ASR 11 have just arrived, wohoo!

Brooks Adrenaline ASR - I've been wearing them throughout my training on Rory's advice.

These shoes saved my life on the aforementioned blistering race, as I’ve done pretty much all my training in them. They are support shoes so my pronating left foot is happiest in them. They’re not the lightest, and the grip isn’t aggressive enough for full on mud, but I’d rather slide around a bit in heavier shoes that fit me really well than get blistered feet from ones that don’t fit. I can’t risk that on a 6-day race.

Better get wearing these new ones in then, I’ve got 8 days! They were super comfy straight from the box last time though, so after my 10 miler Sat and 15 miler Sun they should be cool. Might wear them around the office too…
